What Is Influencer Media Value and How Is It Calculated?
Influencer media valueis an estimate of what a creator's organic reach would cost if you paid for the same exposure through social ads. It turns a fuzzy "is this creator worth it?" question into a number you can compare against an asking price. Here's how it works.
What is media value?
Media value (sometimes called earned media value) answers a simple question: if you had to buy this creator's reach as paid advertising, how much would it cost? If a creator's posts generate the equivalent of ₦2,000,000 worth of ad impressions, their media value for that period is roughly ₦2,000,000. It's a benchmark for what their organic exposure is worth.
Why it matters
- Benchmarking fees— compare a creator's asking price against the value of the reach they actually deliver.
- Comparing creators — put two creators side by side on value-for-money, not just follower count.
- Justifying spend — give finance and clients a defensible number for what a partnership is worth.
How media value is calculated
At its core, media value is estimated impressions × a cost per thousand impressions (CPM):
Two inputs drive it:
- Impressions— how many times the content was seen, estimated from views and reach across a creator's recent posts.
- CPM— the going rate to buy 1,000 impressions through social ads, which is what you'd otherwise pay for that exposure.
A worked example
Say a creator's recent posts produced about 2,000,000 estimated impressions over 30 days, and the reference CPM is roughly $7.62 (about ₦12,000 at ₦1,600/$):
- Impressions ÷ 1,000 = 2,000,000 ÷ 1,000 = 2,000 thousand-impression units.
- 2,000 × $7.62 = $15,240 ≈ ₦24.4M in media value for the period.
That single number now lets you ask the right question: is the creator's fee a fraction of the reach value they deliver, or more than it's worth?
Media value vs. cost (CPM, CPE, CPV)
Media value is the headline number; the per-cost metrics tell you efficiency:
- CPM — cost per 1,000 impressions.
- CPE — cost per engagement (likes + comments).
- CPV — cost per video view.
A creator can have a big media value but a poor CPE if their audience scrolls past without engaging — which is exactly why you read these together.
How ViralGet shows media value
